A company calling their product ‘The Ultimate’ anything is just arrogant. Or is it? Why are we calling this bag the Ultimate Overnighter? Simply put: It’s the bag we designed for us. Ultimate to us. When you design a bag you’ve always dreamed of carrying you get excited. It’s the Ultimate in simplicity. With few moving parts. The right amount of form & function. No artifice. It’s the Ultimate in that way. There’s another reason we call it ‘The Ultimate Overnighter’...and that all starts with the number zero. You see, Defy has zero advertising budget. Zero. Nada. Zilch. How does this translate into us believing this bag is the Ultimate? Simple: Most high end leather overnighters produced by well established global brands build the cost of their massive advertising budgets directly into the cost of the bag. Often times this prompts corner cutting and the use of lower quality, more cost efficient materials to keep production costs down. Not Defy. Bootstrapping has it’s privileges! What do we do? We drive 8 miles south of our workshop to the iconic century old Horween Leather Tannery in Chicago where we select (in person) the ultimate leather. $125 of leather in each and every bag to be exact. For our zippers we’ve tried more expensive, imported zippers only to find that USA made YKK water-resistant zippers have them beat. For the inside lining we wanted something not only durable, but easy to clean. Black, simple military-grade Ripstop parachute material keeps this carry sporty. The carry straps are the perfect length for carrying in your hand, over your shoulder or (for many) on your back like a backpack. This series is perfect for day trips, the gym, overnighters or lightly packed weekend stays. Defy is hand-crafting the Ultimate Overnighters in Chicago in small batches. This enables us to maintain the highest leather-crafting standards possible and continue to provide jobs in our community. Our leather crafts people have a combined 60 years experience in making high end leather products. *Complies with TSA carry-on guidelines. About the leather: The Horween leather is first chromium tanned, which makes it durable and supple, and then re tanned with vegetable tannins—derived from tree leaves, bark, and other plant material—to allow it to patina well and to be easily shaped. It is full grain, which means it has not been sanded, buffed, or corrected in any way to remove or cover up imperfections. The leather is hand-rubbed with several coats of aniline dye and hand-glazed to give it its burnished appearance. The naturally occurring hides come from animals that were used for meat. Each bag is measured and cut by hand and triple-stitched with industrial-strength, extra thick thread at each joint point for added strength by Chicago crafts people.
